What's My Connection to Mountaintop Removal?

QUICK LINKS:

GOOD NEWS!

We were unable to find any connections to mountaintop removal for the zip code

There are several possible reasons why we were unable to find a connection. These include:

  1. There are no coal-fired power plants connected to your grid.

  2. All coal-fired power plants on your electric grid purchase coal from companies that are not engaged in mountaintop removal.

  3. Our database was unable to connect your zip code to the correct electric utility. If you believe we have made an error for your zip code, please let us know. If you would like to try to find your electric provider from a list rather than by zip a code search, CLICK HERE.

...NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS:

If you bank, pay taxes or vote, you're probably still connected to mountaintop removal -
even if your electric utility is not connected

BANKS:

If you have an account with one of the many financial institutions that finance mountaintop removal then you are connected to mountaintop removal as well. Here are some US banks that are major financers of companies engaged in mountaintop removal:

  • Citibank
  • Bank of America
  • JP Morgan Chase
  • Wachovia
  • Wells Fargo
  • Mellon Financial
  • Morgan Stanley
  • Lehman Brothers
  • Merrill Lynch
  • Goldman Sachs

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS:

Because coal mining recieves billions of dollars in government subsidies each year, every person that pays taxes is helping to subsidize mountaintop removal. While it's difficult to track your elected official's votes on the multitude of bills that provide tax-payer subsidies to big coal companies, an excellent indicator of where your official stands on mountaintop removal is whether he or she support's legislation in Congress to stop it.

Click the "this list" links below to see whether your elected officials are co-sponsoring legislation to end mountaintop removal - and if they aren't, ask why!

If your Representative is not on this list, click here to send an email asking your Representative to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act.

If your Senators are not on this list, click here to send an email asking your Senators to co-sponsor the Appalachia Restoration Act.
