In the heart of Appalachia, where the coal industry wields enormous power over government and public opinion, lifelong resident Maria Gunnoe fights against environmentally-devastating mountaintop removal mining and valley fill operations. Her advocacy has led to the closure of mines in the region and stricter regulations for the industry. She is currently an organizer with the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (OVEC).
Today it was announced that Maria won the 2009 Goldman Environmental Prize for North America. Read more about the award, and Maria amazing story, here and here.

Outstanding! Maria has worked so hard and has done so much to champion the issue of Mountaintop Removal. Given the level of threat that MTR poses to natural resources and human health, I can’t think of a more fitting recipient of the Goldman Prize this year.
Congratulations, Maria!!
